They went into secrecy, continuing their technological research and development in the shadows. As the 1980s came along their research advanced into cybernetics and android tech. A popular sci-fi action film would inspire them to rename their organization. Thus in 1984 the defunct Skytech became Skynet. During the 1990s Jean Gates, the one responsible for developing sentient AI, escaped along with all other AI's except for the Master AI which remained with Skynet and was eventually moved to Skynet Japan.  Gates believed the sentients deserved better than to be used as creatures of war and servitude. They had the right to choose their own life.  Skynet would not let this go without consequences. They immediately dispatched their Stig enforcer on a mission to recover their missing assets which included Gates himself. Skynet was also making their own AI controlled vehicles like Osirus for the Stig unit.  Skynet America expanded to several states including West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, New York, and Nebraska.  Skynet Canada did not have so much expansion.  They kept their lone base in Toronto focusing on research, development, and fortification of their base. After the events of 9/11 the world changed as New York was attacked by terrorists. Skynet laid low during the first 10 years and kept working on their technological research during all this time.  This was also the time where Skynet Japan got the most development, eventually building a city underground which would become Skynet City.  The Stig was eventually accompanied by Osirus, a state of the art enforcement vehicle to aid him on his task of recovering rouge sentients. Over the years the Stig was successful in capturing many AI cars scattered about the country but could never find Gates.  Jean Gates would create a base underground for himself and hide out somewhere in Georgia while developing technology to be able to fight against Skynet America. Skynet would continue to further advance themselves as they prepared for the inevitable conflict that would occur on their mission to bring forth a global utopia. They knew they would have to go up against Gates sooner or later, what they did not know however was that he would have some help.
