Project STIG was the result of extensive research and development in the field of cybernetics. All throughout project NERV, Skynet learned how much the human body could be mechanically enhanced and augmented. Eventually they found the correct way for a human to survive the transformation but discovered they could not handle it psychologically. It took a well disciplined and strong mind to be able to overcome this issue which made Skynet seek strong individuals for Project STIG.

Eventually they would come across the one known as "Bruce". Bruce was highly skilled in martial arts and Skynet would soon discover he also held some Ki energy abilities. They would take advantage of the fact that he was dying to cure him of his aliment before putting him under knife for extensive cybernetic surgery. The Stig's fighting prowess nearly tripled in performance with increases in speed and strength that would easily overpower any normal human.

However, the amount of mechanical augmentation was so invasive that all traces of natural Ki dissipated. Skynet lacked a true understanding of how Ki energy worked at the time of Project STIG's completion. They thought they could just replace it with an artificial Ki system which channeled electrical energy through a small core. They would discover later on that this was no replacement for natural Ki and was vastly inferior.

The Stig was the pinnacle of 1980s Skynet engineering. A version 2 would soon undergo research and development.
