KITT the Knight Industries Two Thousand was the brainchild of Mr. Knight the owner of Knight Industries. KITT's AI was created around the same time as KARR. The difference however is that while KARR went on to be installed in an advanced prototype vehicle, KITT was fated to become a mainframe AI for the government. However, after the critical failure of KARR; KITT was re-purposed by Knight Industries to become the successor to project KARR. KITT was created by Mr. Knight himself with help from some other notable computer scientists including Bonnie Barstow who would later become KITT's main mechanic.

KITT's main CPU was first installed in a mainframe computer used by the United States government in Washington D.C. After experiencing trouble with KARR which resulted in him being deactivated Mr. Knight saw better use for KITT in the Foundation for Law and Government. He was removed from the government's IBM mainframe and eventually KITT's CPU would be moved to the more advanced version of KARR's vehicular body. KARR was supposed to be dismantled after KITT's creation and become spare parts for KITT but for whatever reason that day never came and instead he was locked away in a storage warehouse to never see the light of day...that is till he was stolen. KITT was the second vehicle built by Knight Industries with artificial intelligence but the first one that was stable. By this time Devon had found the perfect driver for KITT, someone who would be compatible as his crime fighting partner. KITT was given detailed files about a man named Michael Knight and was given a mission to seek him out. KITT would aid Michael while he was on one of his spy missions for the government and save his life. In the process KITT befriended Michael and learned about why KITT came for him. After learning what FLAG was about, Michael decided to join them in their mission to make a difference.

Unlike KARR, KITT. is programmed primarily to protect Michael and all human life at all costs. This difference in programming had vast changes on KITT's personality versus his psychopathic predecessor. KITT is much more caring with a warm personality. His deep function is the preservation of human life, and Michael's in particular. Over the years his AI became more advanced with experience, growing and learning from the environment around him. For not being developed by Skynet and housed in an outdated architecture, KITT's advancements in AI were impressive. He even developed a basic understanding of emotions, though a more complex understanding would come later once he was upgraded by Gates to be able to handle Skynet's forces better.
